Catalonia Mobility Encounter- YOMO Festival 2018

In September, the ScienceGirls project entered its second and final year. The purpose of this project is to research why female students rarely continue to study science subjects beyond GCSE, despite out performing their male peers. At the end of the two years, a research paper will be completed, published and used across Europe, with a hope of encouraging girls to stay in science.

The ScienceGirls projects involves Furness Academy as the UK coordinator, along with partner school, universities and businesses from Catalonia, Greece, Romania, Turkey, Lithuania and Slovenia.

The project will culminate in a couple of weeks time, when all the students involved in the project will meet in Berga, Catalonia for a whole week of science exploration and study. Each country will be bringing 10-15 girls along for this experience week, along with a number of teachers.

During this week, the girls will work in mixed teams with students from all the other countries, producing presentations about their experiences of science and their, hopefully, changed perceptions of this after being part of the ScieceGirls project.
The girls will also spend two days at the YOMO festival. This festival sees over 15,000 students and educators from across Catalonia and the rest of Spain take part in a week of activities displaying “where science and tech meet mobile”.

All the ScienceGirls participants will be presenting to those visiting the YOMO festival about the project, their role, what they have learned and their recommendations for the future.

The girls will also spend a day seeing the sights of Barcelona and visiting a number of universities and educational establishments during their visit to Catalonia.
